Day 5 recap

Tom and I left from the trail head near Jefferson this morning with the goal of hitting Cottage Grove. We made it to Deerfield. Total distance today was like 15 miles. Both our feet are wrecked. Mine are bruised and blistered. Tom’s are blistered. Oh the fun. Day 1 just jacked our bodies up and we’re paying for it now–tenfold.
In all honesty, though, we are having fun. The weather has been better and lighter packs have been a welcomed relief for us. It’s just our feet being little Benedict Arnold’s and betraying us. I think the doc crew got footage of me using a needle to drain my feet today. I’d show you a picture, but I’m not willing to pay your carpet cleaning bills.
Tom and my morale is still good and we’re looking forward to tomorrow. A word to people who wish to walk with us…please refer to our website or twitter as each GPS beacon sent is registered there. Also, to communities planning a reception or something for us, we’re doing what we can to stay on track. Earlier today, I was feeling especially bad that so many people wanted to walk with us over Labor Day weekend, but our geriatric pace (sorry to all those who are among that pop…it’s not an insult) prohibited that. We’re doing what we can.
OK…time for bed. We have an early day tomorrow and many, many miles we hope to cover. If all goes OK, we enter Madison.

Keep it up…don’t worry about the mileage…get ultra light and use duct tape for your blisters. It saved my feet the first 500 miles of my AT hike!
    Hike on,
